Installing a kitchen faucet in your Condo’s Kitchen

What makes Toronto different from New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Vancouver, Miami, and Houston? It is a large city, metropolitan, cosmopolitan, and a big city with a multilingual population like the rest.

Toronto is located on the shores of Lake Ontario. Hence, it is safe from the sea breeze and almost all metallic items in homes across the city are safe from sea breeze and its induced rusting. However, they do rust eventually but at a slower pace in comparison to coastal cities.

Even if residents purchased a top-notch condo from a listing of Yorkville condos for sale, it would still require maintenance and repairs. Needless to say, this is a part and parcel of life itself.

The COVID-19 caused a lockdown of most businesses and offices across the globe. Calling a plumber at the beginning of the lockdown became an impossible task. With washing hands becoming more than necessary, residents eventually started giving their faucets more attention than ever.

What if a faucet started dripping? It is bad, isn’t it? Oh yes, it is. Is its shine peeling off? Is the chrome losing its place on the faucet? If it is so, do you think its time to change the faucet? According to common sense, it obviously and surely is the time to change the faucet.

Are our plumbing repairs intimidating? And how to install a new faucet in the kitchen?

Not exactly, but at times they surely can be. The reason is that no one wants to flood their home by accident. If their living in an apartment loft or a condo, then replacing a leaky faucet with a new one as well as wrapping up all plumbing repair jobs is a must.

If there is no plumber available, especially when you need their assistance for a faucet; then there is no need to worry. Why? The online world is filled with ‘Do it yourself’ (DIY) tutorials for installing faucets in your home, whether it’s the bathroom sink or the kitchen sink.

Here are the supplies you need for changing a faucet:

  • A bucket.
  • Some rags.
  • A flashlight.
  • A new faucet.
  • An adjustable wrench.
  • Screwdriver
  • Cleaner
  • Some Towels.

A Teflon tape might be considered optional, but you might need it, just in case.

Before anyone buys a new faucet, they must check the current setup of the kitchen sink. Checking under the sink to see the number of holes present is a must. This helps determine the type of faucet that will work with the sink. If a sink has three to four holes, then a single-hole faucet can work with the addition of a deck plate.

Here are the steps to adding a new faucet to the condo’s kitchen:

Take everything out from underneath the sink. Why? Because this work takes place in tight spaces and no one would like to spill something underneath the sink. Working in tight spaces is tough so making that space large enough to work is a much better option. Do not forget to use a towel nearby to absorb dripping water.

Turn off the water supply lines to the kitchen faucet. They are hot and cold-water valves beneath the sink. Turning them off will help remove of the faucet with relative ease. Ensure that the faucet is in the ‘on’ position to ensure relief of water pressure.

With the water supply safely turned off, the hot and cold-water supply lines can be unhooked off the broken faucet. For this, the wrench is needed. All that is needed from using the wrench is loosening up the lines until they are unhooked for the faucet.

A small amount of water might drip out and that is normal. A bucket and a rag will come in handy.

Now its time to loosen the faucet from beneath the kitchen for its eventual removal.

Not every faucet is the same; the one resident can have is different from what their neighbors have. Some have rings that can be loosened easily while some are connected with the aid of nuts. Hence, if the faucet needing removal is connected through nuts, using a wrench becomes necessary.

Now is the time to remove the faucet from the top of the sink and throwing it away for good.

If there is any residue left underneath the faucet or around it, clean it up thoroughly with a towel. Since this a good time to clean dirty spots, it should be done with effort. Also, such areas should be sanitized and disinfected.

Before installing the new faucet, read its manual as each faucet is not the same. However, here are some general steps to deal with its installation.

  • Install the faucet through the hole present on the top of the sink.
  • Enlist the help of a friend, spouse, child, or live-in partner to help keep the faucet secure on the top while you fix the nuts or ring underneath the sink.
  • If the faucet has a ring, secure it by tightening it using your fingertips. If it has nuts, use the wrench to tighten them. In case it has screws, use the screwdriver to tighten them. This will help secure the faucet.

Once the faucet is tightly secured, attach the hot and cold-water lines back to their valves and the faucet. Wrap the threaded pipes with Teflon tape if necessary but it’s better to do so as it keeps the seal tight and the connections leak-proof.

Now its time to turn on the water supply valves but not too quickly. Each faucet should be checked to see if both hot and cold-water taps are working and flow is equal too.

Wasn’t that easy? It sure was.

Within some time, residents can improve their kitchen’s look and feel. It does cost only the price of a faucet to do so. Other than that, removing the clutter and cleaning the kitchen will make it look even nicer.
